Helen Mirren is a quintessentially British and Oscar winning actress who has found fame over two continents. Mirren was born in Ilford, Essex and educated in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. Mirren started her acting career at the National Youth Theatre before moving to the Royal Shakespeare Company, continuing her success on stage and receiving Laurence Olivier theatre award nominations. Mirren found BAFTA recognition for her famous role as Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison in Prime Suspect. Mirren has enjoyed a celebrated career, winning an Oscar, SAG awards, BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Emmy Awards. In 2003, Mirren was bestowed a DBE (Dame of the British Empire) in the Queen's birthday honours. Mirren's film career includes critically acclaimed Gosford Park, comedy drama Calendar Girls and The Queen.
