Mike Newell is an English director and producer of motion pictures for the screen and for television. He was born in St Albans in Hertfordshire and educated at St Albans School and then Magdalene College in Cambridge. He then attended a three year training course at Granada Television, with the intention of entering theatre after spending several years as a member of St Albans Abbey Theatre's Company of Ten. Newell directed many British TV shows from the 1960s onwards. He continued his successes in the film industry and went onto direct critically acclaimed Four Weddings and a Funeral in 1994. Since, Newell has directed a number of Hollywood films and in 2005 he became the first British director of the Harry Potter film series on Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The film was the fourth instalment of the series and was a major success worldwide.
