Lord Richard Attenborough CBE is an English actor, director and producer. Attenborough has had bestowed two Academy Awards, four BAFTA awards and three Golden Globes. Attenborough was born in Cambridge and his father was a don at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. Attenborough's film career began in 1942 as a deserting sailor in In Which We Serve. Attenborough worked prolifically in British films for the next thirty years with acting credits including The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles and Guns at Batasi. He won a Golden Globe for best director for the epic film Gandhi in 1983, which boasts, amongst other things, the biggest scene with extras of any film - a million Indians are in the scene of Gandhi's funeral! Attenborough is a giant of the British Film Industry. He was awarded the CBE in 1967, received a knighthood in 1976 and was created a life peer in 1993.
