Tom Butterworth is a British scriptwriter who was brought up in St Albans, Hertfordshire along with his brothers Steve who is a producer and Jez who is also a writer and an actor. Much of the Butterworth's inspiration for the script of Birthday Girl came from their childhood memories of Hertfordshire.
