Trevor Howard CBE was an Academy Award nominated English film, stage and television actor who was born in Margate but spent many years of his later life living in Arkley in Hertfordshire. Howard is probably best known for his role as Doctor Alec Harvey in one of the best British films ever made Brief Encounter. He starred in The Key for which he received the best actor award from BAFTA and Sons and Lovers for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for best actor. Another notable performance, some say his best, was in The Heart of the Matter.
