Waltham Cross is a busy centre with a pedestrianised high street boasting a variety of shops and weekly Wednesday and Friday street markets. In the centre of the town lies one of the three surviving Eleanor crosses. Twelve were originally set up by Edward I to commemorate the resting places of his dead queen, Eleanor of Castile. The ruins of King James I Theobolds Palace can be found in the grounds of nearby Cedars Park, where you can enjoy the heritage trail and take time out in the traditional tea rooms.
The century old custom of the Boxing Day Bakers and Sweeps football match takes place on Waltham Cross playing fields. This involves an oversize ball, tons of soot and flour and no rules!
