Audley End House and Gardens

Printer friendly version >

King Henry VIII gave Walden Abbey to Sir Thomas Audley, who transformed it into his mansion, the charming Audley End. It is now one of England’s grandest country homes and has over 30 lavishly decorated rooms to explore. The sumptuous interior is due to the 3rd Baron Braybrooke who inherited Audley End in 1825. He filled it with treasures including paintings by Masters such as Holbein and Canaletto. A rare set of English tapestries by Soho weaver Paul Saunders is also on display. The beautiful 19th-century parterre has magnificent floral displays and visitors can step back to Victorian times in the organic walled Kitchen Garden which grows original fruit and vegetable varieties.
