Wheathampstead is one of St Albans district's most attractive villages with a history dating back to pre-Roman times. There are a number of pubs including The Bull dating from the 13th century, some interesting specialist and general shops and a chemist. The High Street is a conservation area, and the church of St. Helen also dates back to the 13th century; it has interesting memorials and brasses. Devil's Dyke is located south-east of the village and is a deep ditch (40ft deep and 100ft wide) which once marked the boundary of an ancient settlement. A number of private properties in the area have been used for filming from time-to-time.
