Burghley House

Printer friendly version >

Dating from 1555 and designed for the most part by William Cecil, Lord High Treasurer to Queen Elizabeth I, Burghley House is one of the largest and grandest Elizabethan stately homes in England. There are 35 key rooms on the ground and first floors, over 80 lesser rooms and numerous halls, corridors, bathrooms and service areas. Beautiful walks cross through the historic parkland, home to a herd of fallow deer, and the Gardens of Surprise and Sculpture Garden have spectacular displays. The gardens and parkland were laid out by Capability Brown. Visitor facilities also include the Orangery Restaurant and Gift Shop.
