Cardington village is close to the county market town of Bedford. It’s best known for its connection with the Cardington airship works founded during World War I. Visit the local cemetery with its mass grave and view the memorial to the R101 disaster. Of the 54 passengers and crew aboard only 6 survived. Whilst not accessible to the public, the massive and truly iconic Cardington airship sheds can be clearly seen from the road and remain a poignant reminder of Britain’s race for supremacy of the skies. Cardington was also the home of the 18th century prison reformer John Howard.
