Dedham Vale and Stour Valley (Essex)

Printer friendly version >

This characteristic lowland English landscape has been made famous by artists such as Constable and Gainsborogh and is still recognisable today. The charm of the villages, interesting local attractions and beauty of the countryside mean there’s no shortage of things to see. Dedham Vale is an Area of Outstanding National Beauty situated on the Suffolk-Essex border and is an example of a lowland river valley which stretches upstream from Manningtree to within one mile of Bures. The landscape is the epitome of the farmed English countryside with rolling fields on valley slopes, lush valley-floor meadows, woodland, open marshes and intimate tributary valleys. Flatford Mill and picturesque Dedham retain their unspoilt quality, despite many summer visitors, and the countryside is characterised by narrow lanes and timber-frame and thatch houses. The River Stour is an important boating and angling water.
