Downham Market

Printer friendly version >

Dating back to Saxon times, Downham Market is a small hillside settlement and one of Norfolk´s oldest market towns. Lying on the edge of the Fens, Downham Market has a 19th century black and white clock tower and local carrstone buildings, some showing a Dutch influence. There is a 15th century church with an unusual spire, a range of individual shops and a bustling market on Fridays and Saturdays. Nearby attractions include Denver Sluice, the 15th century Oxburgh Hall, 12th century Castle Acre Priory, the magnificent Castle Rising and the wide open skies of the Fens.
