Ely Cathedral was built by William the Conqueror as an outpost following the rebellion by Hereward he Wake and remains a fine example of William's devotion to his religion. Oliver Cromwell closed the Cathedral for some 10 years after he fell out with the local Catholic clergy and used it to stable his calvary horses. Thousands of visitors come to Ely Cathedral each year. Few are ever disappointed, for there is something for everyone. Lovers of architecture will rejoice in the different styles, blending to make the whole. History abounds around every corner, and the beauty created by artists in wood, stone and glass is everywhere.
