The iconic white with red banded Happisburgh Lighthouse is the oldest working light in East Anglia, and the only independently run lighthouse in Great Britain. It was built in 1790 and was originally one of a pair of lights marking safe passage around the Happisburgh Sands. The tower is 85ft tall and the lantern is 134ft above sea level. In 1990 the lighthouse was saved as a working light by the local community with the help of late Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, and is maintained and operated by voluntary contributions. The lighthouse is privately owned but opens on some weekends and public holidays.
