Hatfield House is a fine Jacobean mansion in a spectacular countryside setting surrounded by parkland. Built by Robert Cecil in 1607 the House has marvellous displays of pictures, furnishings and historic armour. Alongside Hatfield House stands the Tudor Old Palace (built in 1485) where Elizabeth I lived on and off for the first 25 years of her life. The garden dates from the 17th century and includes a scented garden, herb garden and knot garden. In the Park an oak tree marks the place where Princess Elizabeth heard of her accession to the throne. Visitors can enjoy the extensive parkland and there is a play area for children with an events programme throughout the year. Hatfield House is only 20 miles from central London.
