Printer friendly version >

Managed by the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, Hickling Broad is the largest of the Norfolk broads and has a staithe, private moorings, the Pleasure Boat Inn and some of the best views in Norfolk. It is a haven for migrating birds and wildlife, including waders, osprey, spoonbill, the rare Norfolk hawker dragonfly and swallow-tail butterfly, both of which breed on the Broads. There are gentle walks under wide and the Water Trail (weather permitting) takes visitors by boat through the quiet backwaters to the Tree Tower, with its breathtaking views of the Broads (bookings recommended). Check with the Trust for visiting times. The nearby village of Hickling is split into two parts: Hickling Heath (on the edge of Hickling Broad) and Hickling Green which is residential with a pub, The Greyhound, and many pretty properties. The track between the two offers lovely views and leads to a nature reserve with a visitor centre, marked trails, observation towers and viewing platforms.
