Monksmead School (not accessible)

Printer friendly version >

This is an operational primary school which is not accessible to the public close to Borehamwood town centre. Given the town’s association with film, it has acquired the nickname, "British Hollywood". Many well-known movies including Moby Dick, The Dam Busters, 633 Squadron, The Shining, the first three Indiana Jones films and the first three Star Wars movies were based at the former Associated British Studios (partly demolished in the 1980s). The area between the two was redeveloped to form the now Elstree Film Studios. The former British National Studios is now the BBC Elstree Centre, and MGM-British Studios (demolished in the 1970s) saw the production of many cult classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Where Eagles Dare and Goodbye, Mr. Chips. The Elstree Film and Television Heritage Group are dedicated to recording, preserving and sharing the town’s legacy of film and television.
