Norfolk Wildlife Trust was established in 1926 and is the oldest of a national network of 47 Wildlife Trusts in the UK which aims to protect and enhance the country’s wildlife and wild places. In Norfolk there are over 50 nature reserves and protected sites including ten kilometres of coastline, nine Norfolk broads, nine National Nature Reserves and five ancient woodlands. Reserves open to visitors include: Foxley Wood – an ancient woodland alive with birdsong and bathed in flowers and butterflies in spring; Cley Marshes – a birding Mecca, flush with unusual wading and breeding birds in a stunning situation on the north Norfolk coast complete with award-winning visitor centre, hides, nature trails and gift shop; Weeting Heath – a wonderful piece of Breck heath, famous for its rare flora and the stone curlew complete with hides, nature trails and a visitor centre; Ranworth Broad – an ideal family day out with fun boardwalks, birding for beginners, a visitor centre, nature trails and a shop; Hickling Broad – with fabulous nature trails under open skies, the best views in Norfolk, hides, a shop and a visitor centre. Check with the Trust for opening times and directions. The Trust is supportive of filming and a number of sites have been used for filming locations which aids the Trust’s conservation efforts.
