Berkhamsted is the largest common in the Chilterns, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with 427 hectares and includes Northchurch Common. Beckhamsted common covers a large arc from Northchurch over towards Frithsden and is criss-crossed by paths and tracks, many of which are rights of way. Berkhamsted common is the most open of the Ashridge commons and its perfect for kite flying, picnics, walking, horseriding or mountain biking. Fallow deer can often be seen in the glades and open areas and there is a wide variety of bird species. The bluebells are spectacular in the spring and are supplemented by many other woodland flowers.
With its canals, unusual shops, rich history and the beautiful Art Deco Rex Cinema, Berkhamsted is well worth a visit.
