The town of Harwich is well known for its maritime heritage. Attractions include the narrow street, historic buildings and museums including the Redoubt Fort and High and Low Lighthouses. It was also the home of Christopher Jones, the Master of the Mayflower which took the Pilgrim Fathers to the new world. The International Port is a busy North Sea seaport which lies on the south bank of the River Stour, one mile from the town. The port is primarily involved with ferry operations to European destinations such as the Hook of Holland.
