Saffron Walden is a picturesque, medieval town with a rich heritage of buildings. There are fine examples of moulded plasterwork on the Old Sun Inn and the houses in Castle Street & Bridge Street. Also of note are the Eight Bells, the timber-framed Cross Keys, and the medieval Youth Hostel. Saffron Walden Museum has everything from mammoth tusks to mummies, and the grounds contain the ruins of the Castle keep. A real jewel though is Bridge End Garden which has replicated gardening techniques and designs typical of the Victorian era; the hedge maze is of particular appeal to children.
