Shenley Hall

Printer friendly version >

Whilst not regularly open to the public this Grade II designated building opens to the public from time-to-time. Originally called Shenley Hill House, there has been a mansion here since the 14th century. In 1814 the house was put on the market following the death of Charles Arnold whose wife was John Constable’s (the famous painter) sister. The current Hall, designed by FT Baggallay, was built in 1906 and is set in 16 acres of park and woodland with many fine trees, formal gardens and cultivated lawns. In 1914 the Hall was extended by one of Britain's most celebrated architects, Sir Edwin Lutyens. However, the First World War meant his work was never completed. Further modifications were made in the 1930s and the pseudo Georgian East Wing was rebuilt in the 1980s.
