Officially called "The Cathedral & Abbey Church of St Alban", St Albans Cathedral became a Cathedral in 1877, has fine Norman architecture, numerous 13th and 14th century wall paintings and the longest nave of any cathedral in England at 106 metres (348 feet). At its heart is the candlelit shrine of St Alban, a Roman Citizen beheaded because of his faith who became England’s first Christian martyr. As legend has it his head rolled down the hill and a well sprang up at the point where it stopped! The shrine is a site of pilgrimage and used as a place of prayer and meditation by many visitors. It is definitely one of the 'must sees' when visiting St Albans.
