Standon village was first mentioned in the Saxon charter of 944-6 AD and means ‘stony hill’. The Grade I listed St Mary's Church has Saxon origins along with evidence of Victorian restoration. The Hertfordshire puddingstone makes an appearance in the village. On the green near the church, the odd shape of this puddingstone has led to theories that it was used in prehistoric times for tribal fertility ceremonies. Standon’s claim to fame is that The Prime Meridian (medium line of longitude where longitude is defined as 0°) passes to the west of the village. They also have their own Morris men who meet in their local, the Star Public House every Thursday evening. The main event for Standon though is ‘Standon Calling’ which is a three day boutique music festival set on the grounds of a 16th century manor house held July/August; the music festival is child-friendly.
