Thetford Grammar School is not open to the public. It is however more than just a grammar school as there is a junior school on the site, along with pre-school facilities. The school can trace its origins back to AD 631 when Sigbert, who was then King of the East Angles, provided a school for his court in Thetford. Thetford is however well worth a visit. It is an ancient market town surrounded by beautiful Norfolk countryside filled with heritage sites, quiet gardens, open parkland and a relaxing riverside. Many locations in and around Thetford were used as backdrops for the British cult classic comedy 'Dad's Army'. A Dad’s Army trail can be downloaded from www.explorethetford.co.uk, and visitors should make time to explore the Dad's Army Museum which is packed full of memorabilia (www.dadsarmythetford.org.uk. With Thetford Forest and its patchwork of pines, heathland and broadleaves right on the doorstep, the town is an ideal base for discovering Breckland wildlife, walking, cycling and riding.
