When Tilbury Docks first opened in the 1880s, it traded in a range of goods including madeira, timber, sausage skins packed in brine and chutney! It is now used by passenger liners. One of Jeremy Deller's Turner Prize-winning Five Memorials can be found in the passenger lounge of the cruise terminal – a brightly coloured woven banner commemorating the arrival of the Empire Windrush, the ship that brought Caribbean immigrants to England in 1948. Although not open to the public, anyone embarking on a cruise from the London Cruise Terminal can catch a glimpse of the banner.
