Tombland was the site of an Anglo-Saxon market before the Normans arrived and has witnessed many a skirmish, rebellion, and battle, been the victim of plagues and seen the persecution of religious believers; it is allegedly one of the most haunted parts of the city. Some original buildings have survived, including Augustine Steward's House built in 1530 and now home to antique dealers. Tombland is made up of quaint little alleys, quality restaurants and bars, and lies adjacent to Norwich Cathedral linked only by two magnificent gateways: Erpingham Gate (c1420) and Ethelbert Gate (c1316).
