Wells Harbour

Printer friendly version >

This historic harbour is situated in the bustling unspoilt seaside town of Wells-Next-The-Sea and has been a port and natural safe-haven for shipping for at least 600 years. Protected by rare salt marshes behind a sand bar, the Port of Wells was an important harbour in Tudor times and became a thriving maritime centre in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The town retains its historic feel with its narrow streets lined with traditional flint buildings as well as houses with Georgian elegance on the green (The Buttlands). The nearby sandy beach is accessible by car, on foot or via a little railway from the port and fringed with pine trees. From here there is a beautiful walk round to the flat expanse of sand that is Holkham Bay.
