The award-winning 28 Days Later was directed by Danny Boyle and is a post-apocalyptic thriller. After the release of a highly contagious rage virus four survivors, Jim (Cillian Murphy), Selena (Naomi Harris), Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and Hannah (Megan Burns) combine forces in their struggle to escape those who are infected. The film received both critical acclaim and box office success in particular for the production team’s ability to capture what appears to be a deserted London on screen (created by the use of numerous digital cameras). In addition to the filming which took place in England the opening sequences were actually filmed in Germany. This is largely due to the fact that there are only 2 ‘working’ groups of chimps available: one in LA and one in Stuttgart. Johnny the chimp in the opening sequence proved to be very accommodating to the filmmakers; all the scenes involving the chimps were strictly controlled so as not to distress them in any way. The sequel 28 Weeks Later also filmed in the region.
