Inspired by the exploits of the RAF and Commonwealth mosquito air crews during World War II and based on a true story, the film recounts the tale of a combat-weary pilot, Wing Commander Roy Grant (Cliff Robertson), whose RAF squadron is ordered to obliterate a Nazi rocket fuel plant, whatever the cost, tucked away in a Norwegian fjord. The mission is to be supported on the ground by local resistance fighters lead by Lt. Eric Bergman (George Chakiris). To make this film, a squadron of mosquito fighter bombers was resurrected, and shows some dazzling flying sequences and superb special effects.

Bovingdon airfield >
The former airfield and the control tower were used throughout the filming. Key scenes include the opening shots when Group Capt. Don Barrett (Donald Houston) watches 633 Squadron from the control tower as they return from an op (operation) looking forward to three days leave, the crew jovially leave their planes but unfortunately Grant is soon to learn that it's just not meant to be; the scene where the crew return from training just as a group of German Luftwaffe Messerschmitt's attack the airfield; the scene with Grant taking Bergman and his sister, Hilde (Maria Pershy) to the plane that will take Bergman back to Norway to prepare for the mission at which point Bergman asks Grant to look after Hilde in his absence; Bergman is subsequently captured and Grant and Bissell take off from the airfield on an unprecedented mission to destroy the building where he is being held to prevent him disclosing their plans under torture; unfortunately the outcome for Bissell is devastating as when the returning plane comes back into land one of the wheels locks, the plane crashes and Bissell is stuck inside just as it catches light; finally closing scenes with Bovingdon show the squadron leaving on the mission to Norway and then Air Vice Marshal Davis (Harry Andrews) talking to Squadron Leader Frank Adams (Michael Goodliffe) about the success of the operation and the legend that will be 633 Squadron.

Three Compasses, Aldenham >
The pub's exterior was transformed into The Black Swan and appears two scenes. The first one is in the opening shots and shows three planes flying over the pub on their return from a mission. Rosie (Barbara Archer), the barmaid runs out to see who has returned and who has not. Interiors may have been shot in the pub, but this could not be verified. The other scene features the exterior of the pub as a backdrop for Flying Officer Bissell's (Scott Finch) and WAAF Sgt. Mary Blake (Suzan Farmer) wedding reception. After the happy couple drive away, Grant and Hilde say goodnight and agree to meet the following day.
