Amazing Grace is the true story of William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) who led the campaign to abolish slavery in Britain during a period when it was perceived both acceptable and essential for the nation's economy.

    A private, former University of Hertfordshire Campus in Hertford was also used for a variety of interior shots including the Brooks Club House where one scene shows Wilberforce being taunted by the Duke of Clarence (Toby Jones). At the encouragement of William Pitt Wilberforce sings 'Amazing Grace' written by his friend and mentor John Newton (Albert Finney), a former slaver turned abolitionist.

    A private house near Southill in Bedfordshire was used as Thornton's home where Wilberforce is introduced to Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai) by Henry Thornton (Nicholas Farrell).

  • St Mary's the Virgin, Walkern >
    A later scene potentially filmed in St Mary's Church shows John Newton attempting to convince Wilberforce to enter politics and champion the campaign for the abolition of slavery. During this time Wilberforce is introduced to Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai) by Henry Thornton (Nicholas Farrell) at Thornton's home (private house near Southill in Bedfordshire). The couple marry in a this charming little church (St Mary the Virgin in Walkern, Hertfordshire).
