The Oscar, Golden Globe-winning 1956 version of Anastasia was directed by Anatole Litvak and adapted for the screen from a play by Marcelle Maurette. The film tells the tale of an opportunistic Russian businessman, General Sergei Pavlovich Bounine (Yul Brynner) who tries to pass a mysterious impostor as the Grand Duchess Anastasia (Ingrid Bergman). She is so convincing in her performance that even the biggest sceptics believe her, but will she Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna (Helen Hayes)? The film is loosely based on historical fact whereby Anna Anderson claimed for years to be Anastasia but she never met with the Dowager Empress.
