It is England in 1935. Two young people Cecilia Tallis (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy) discover the depth of their feelings for each other. An encounter between the two is seen by Cecilia's younger sister, Briony (Saoirse Ronan) and is misunderstood. As a result Robbie is accused of a crime he did not commit and the couple are tragically ripped apart setting the scene for a series of unhappy events no-one could have envisaged. This Oscar winning love story is deeply moving and based on the novel of the same name by Ian McEwan.

    Four years later, Robbie finds himself in Northern France separated from his troop during the massive retreat to the beaches at Dunkirk. With him are two other solders Tommy Nettle (Daniel Mays) and Frank Mace (Nonso Anozie) who are also separated. The three join together and make for the coast crossing vast stretches of open fenland much of which was shot on location in the Cambridgeshire Fens. In one scene Robbie stands with the backdrop of the Fens behind him looking at the picture of the house Cecilia has given him - a place where she plans for them to meet. It is at this point that it becomes clear Robbie has been wounded.
