Autumnwatch is a successful spin off from the popular Springwatch produced by the BBC and charts the fortunes of wildlife during the months of Autumn. In 2009 the series altered its format. Rather than Monday to Thursday of live action for an hour a day over a couple of weeks, the producers have introduced an eight week Friday night live show with the majority of footage shot during the previous week. The reason for this is because Autumn is more spread out than Spring with changes beginning towards the end of September and continuing through to early November. The new format has allowed the team to follow the deer rut and seals pupping as well as to showcase the arrival of migratory birds such as the various different species of geese and what happens during hibernation. All these events are driven by the seasonal changes over the period enabling the team to illustrate the extraordinary activities which take place amongst the UK’s flora and fauna during the Autumn.
