Written and directed by Stephen Fry, the screenplay is based on the novel 'Vile Bodies' by Evelyn Waugh and tells the story of the creative and sexual exploits of a group of decadent artists in 1930s London. Adam Fenwick-Symes (Stephen Campbell Moore), an aspiring novelist has his novel ‘Bright Young Things’ confiscated by UK customs officials. Faced with an uncertain future as a result, Adam realises he may have to postpone his marriage to Nina Blount (Emily Mortimer) and embarks on a series of rather unusual events to salvage the situation. Fry has a brief cameo part as a Chauffeur and Bright Young Things proved to be the last film to feature John Mills (1908-2005) whose role was to play an elderly, cocaine infused party guest. Bright Young Things has an all star cast including Michael Sheen, Dan Aykroyd, David Tennant, James McAvoy, Jim Broadbent, Peter O’Toole, Imelda Staunton, Richard E Grant and Stockard Channing and was generally well received. Michael Wilmington of the Chicago Tribune declared it to be ‘a brilliant, giddy satiric romp’.
