The BBC's BAFTA award winning drama Canterbury Tales is a modern retelling of six of Chaucer's timeless stories in a modern day setting. Two of the stories, 'The Knight's Tale' and 'The Sea Captain's Tale', were filmed on location in Hertfordshire.

A former school in Borehamwood was used in 'The Knight's Tale' where two prisoners, Ace and Paul, fall in love with their prison teacher, Emily. The former school appears in the last scene when Ace and Paul's friendship is torn apart with devastating effect. Emily and Paul are seen sitting on the steps to the entrance of the former school after the explosion.

Holiday Inn London-Elstree was used in 'The Sea Captain's Tale'. Meena, the wife of a powerful figure in a close knit Asian community, is beautiful and spoilt but has an uncontrollable spending habit which lands her in debt. Unable to turn to her husband, Meena begins an affair with his business partner Pushpinder to escape her debt and further indulge her spending habits. The Holiday Inn London-Elstree is where Meena and Pushpinder meet at the beginning of their affair and at the end where Meena escapes to having destroyed Pushpinder's Hindu Health shop.
