The BAFTA winning remake of the Casino Royale introduces Daniel Craig as James Bond and tells the story of how he became a 007 and evolved into both a popular literary and screen character. This is the 21st film in the James Bond series and proved at the time of its release to be the highest grossing Bond film to-date. Other Bond films which have shot in the region include Die Another Day, Golden Eye and Quantum of Solace. Following his first two professional assinations Bond is granted his 'licence to kill' by M (Judie Dench) and promoted to '00' status. His first mission leads him on a trail from Madagascar to the Bahamas to Montenegro to play a high stakes poker game at the Casino Royale against Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen), a ruthless businessman under threat from his clients and as a consequence desperate to restore his funds by winning the game. On the journey to Montenegro he meets Vesper Lynd who is to act as his Treasury official and falls completely in love with her, a love that will define his behaviour for years to come.

  • Millbrook Proving Ground (Liddlington) >
Unable to film a complicated road sequence in Montenegro the crew returned to the UK and based themselves Millbrook Proving Ground, which is not accessible to the public, near Liddlington in Bedfordshire where they could have complete control of the road. The scene sees Bond and Vesper having dinner following the poker game and her getting a message from Mathis (Giancarlo Giannini); she tells James she must leave. He subsequently witnesses her being apprehended and follows to rescue her. Bond drives his Aston Martin at high speed into the night. As the Bedfordshire countryside, which doubling perfectly for Montenegro, flashes by he comes over the brow of a hill to find Vesper lying in the middle of the road. He swerves to avoid her and the car rolls. The injured Bond is then placed in the back of the car with Vesper; they are now Le Chiffre's captivies. The Aston Martin scene won a place in the Guinness World Records for the most cannon rolls in a car. The scene was particularly difficult to shoot as the crew's first attempts saw the car continuing to land on all fours and holding the road rather than rolling! In the end they had to tamper with the car's gear box to achieve the desired result.
