Whilst it was not a huge box office success The Children of Men was nominated for 4 Oscars and won 2 BAFTAs. The story is based loosely on a 1992 P.D. James novel of the same name written and directed by Alfonso Cuaron who also directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. It is set in the near future (2027) when mankind seems doomed by an epidemic of male infertility that has lasted two decades. A former political activist, Theo Faron (Clive Owen) agrees to help transport Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), a pregnant African refugee to a sanctuary with the aim of trying to save the future of humankind. The Children of Men filmed in and around London including Hertfordshire and Essex and used UK visual effects companies, Framestore and Double Negative assisting Cuaron to create ‘environments and shots that wouldn’t otherwise be possible’ according to Variety.

Narrowly avoiding a bomb Theo visits his friend, Jasper Palmer (Michael Caine), an aging hippie and former editorial cartoonist who lives with his wife in a secluded hideaway deep in the countryside growing cannabis. In a later scene Theo returns with Kee and Miriam (Pam Ferris), a midwife, having escaped from the Fishes, an underground resistance group. Miriam tells them that the Human Project ship is due to dock at a buoy offshore from the Bexhill detention centre. Jasper proposes a plan to get them into the camp but the Fishes discover the hideout. Theo, Kee and Miriam escape but realising he cannot leave his wife, Jasper remains behind and is subsequently murdered by the group when he refuses to reveal their whereabouts.
