The television version of P.D. James' debut novel was produced for ITV and was generally well received. The story surrounds the investigations of poetry-writing detective Adam Dalgliesh (Roy Marsden) who investigates the death of a young serving girl, Sally Jupp (Kim Thomson) and is filmed largely on location at Rainthorpe Hall in Norfolk.

    Rainthorpe Hall is the location used as Martingale Hall. Scenes include the opening dinner party hosted by Mrs Maxie (Phyllis Calvert). Serving at the dinner party is Sally Jupp, a single mother. As the story unfolds Sally causes Deborah (Mel Martin), Mrs Maxie's daughter, more and more concern about Sally and her motives although she seems completely unfazed when Sally arrives at the fete wearing exactly the same outfit as she is. Following Sally's murder the following day a tangled web of deceipt unfolds but who has killed Sally?
