Directed by John Grierson this influential black and white documentary recounted the lives of North Sea herring fishersmen. Grierson was instrumental in bringing together a group of filmmakers known as the Documentary Film Movement who sought to blending factual information, propaganda and education to offer a more poetic aesthetic approach to documentary filmmaking. Drifters was one such example of their work.
