Printer friendly version >
BAFTA award-winning Sandy Welch has brought a fresh, witty and modern take on this classic Jane Austen tale. Directed by Jim O’Hanlon the BBC’s 4 hour-long episodes were designed to give Welch the opportunity to provide a rich insight into the complex character of Miss Emma Woodhouse (Romola Garai), a young woman of fortune who revelling in what she perceives as her successes with match-making, embarks on finding a match for her less fortunate friend, Harriet Smith (Louise Dylan). On her journey she begins to make a startling discovery of her own heart. Emma is set in the fictional village of Highbury (Surrey) and makes use of a number of historic properties in the greater south-east. The adaptation strived to create a more modern representation. However, this particular adaptation of Emma received rather mixed reviews.
