Filmed at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, Thomas (Tom) Jericho (Dougray Scott) a brilliant mathematician and code breaker returns to Bletchley Park, Britain's top secret intelligence station, having recovered from a nervous breakdown caused in part by the breakup of his relationship with Claire Romali (Saffron Burrows) who has disappeared just when the authorities suspect there may be a spy at the Park. Meanwhile Nazi U boats have changed the code by which they communicate with each other and the German High Command when an Allied merchant shipping convoy is crossing the Atlantic with 10,000 passengers and supplies. Tom is soon embroiled in the quest to solve both mysteries.
