This BAFTA nominated BBC drama produced for television was directed by Aisling Walsh and based on the novel by Sarah Waters (nominated for the Man Booker Prize) with screenplay by Peter Ransley. The story is set in Victorian England and tells the tale of a young female servant, Sue Trinder (Sally Hawkins), who is enlisted by her guardian Mrs Sucksby (Imelda Staunton) and Mrs Sucksby’s friend, Richard Rivers (Rupert Evans), to steal from her mistress, Maud Lilly (Elaine Cassidy), but the plan goes awry when Sue falls in love with Maud instead.
