Whilst based at EMI-MGM Studios in Borehamwood much of the location filming took place in Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. Directed by Mike Hodges and nominated for a BAFTA, Get Carter is based on the novel by Ted Lewis entitled ‘Jack’s Return Home’, which was inspired by true events. It tells the tale of a cockney gangster, Jack Carter (Michael Caine) who travels to Newcastle to investigate his brother's murder. The 1971 version of Get Carter, whilst initially perceived to be excessively violent and soulless, has since developed cult status. It was re-made in 2000 with Sylvester Stallone in the lead role, but it was not well received.
