Opening scenes see Bond witnessing the death of 006 agent Alec Trevelyan (Sean Bean) at the Arkangel Chemical Weapons Facility in USSR. Some 9 years later at the Space Weapons Control Centre in Severnaya the staff are massacred and the control disk for the dual GoldenEye satellite weapons is stolen. However, there are two survivors, Boris Grishenko (Alan Cumming) and Natalya Simonova (Izabella Scorupco). Bond and Natalya having both been captured and escape join forces. It travels through the Cambridgeshire countryside which doubles perfectly for Russia with 007 on the trail. Having been discovered, Bond and Natalya escape but not before Natalya finds out Boris is actually in Cuba suggesting that that is where Alec will also be heading. The pair set off in pursuit.
