Gosford Park
Printer friendly version >
Directed by Robert Altman, the Oscar winning Gosford Park with its all star cast is set in 1932 in an English country house. This multi storylined film was shot virtually entirely on location in Syon House for the upstairs bedrooms and Wrotham Park near Borehamwood for the exteriors, staircase, dining room and drawing room. Wrotham Park is a private house and not open to the public other than for events such as conferences and weddings; Shepperton studios was used for off-location scenes. Upon the film's release many country houses, particularly those with servants quarters, saw a rise in their visitor admissions. Whilst it could not be statistically proven that the film stimulated this increased interest in visiting stately homes and country houses as no-one collectively asked the question, the increased income was very welcome to help conserve British built heritage for future generations of visitors to come, and seemed to many more than just a coincidence given the success of the film. Gosford Park strives to reflect the world in which the British upper class system revolved at the time and the impact on those who were employed in their service. Stephen Fry (Inspector Thompson) said that Gosford Park illustrated the upper class' dependency on the servant class for their every need. The jewelry worn by the cast during the shoot was all authentic and had to be brought in by armed guards ahead of each day's filming.

Sir William McCordle (Michael Gambon), the owner, hosts a shooting weekend and invites a number of wealthy guests and their servants which results in conflicts both above and below stairs as soon as the guests begin to arrive. Following a dinner party McCordle retires and is found murdered in the study by Lady Stockbridge (Geraldine Somerville). As the investigations begin lead by Inspector Thompson, McCordle's lifestyle, and those whose lives were entwined with his, begins to unfold with some startling revelations. As the film shot on location at the house for many weeks particular scenes are too numerous to detail.
