This BAFTA award-winning popular children’s television series was originally produced by the BBC in 1978 and ran for 30 years with a total of 31 series. The drama was set around the fictional Grange Hill Comprehensive School; there was controversy when it first screened given the grittier side to the storylines. The series was at its most popular in the 1980s when it moved to BBC Elstree in 1985 so from series 8 some exterior filming was actually done on a closed set. During the 1990s a number of real life schools, including Nicholas Hawksmoor School (formerly Borehamwood Grammar but now called Hertswood School), Bushey Mead’s School and St Audrey’s School in Hatfield (now called Onslow St Audrey’s Secondary School) were used for location shoots prior to the programme moving to Liverpool in 2002.
