Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan
Printer friendly version >
Based on the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs. An explorer, Philippe D’Arnot (Ian Holm), discovers a man brought up from a child by apes. Believing him to be an heir to the Earl of Greystoke, whose son died in Africa with his wife just after she had given birth to a son, he returns the man to human civilisation. The first part of the story is, in part, in keeping with the plot in the novel, but the second part of the film deviates away from the book. Nominated for 3 Oscars, the BAFTA winning Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes is a British film with an all star cast. Christopher Lambert takes the lead role of Tarzan and John Clayton, Andie MacDowell stars as Jane (although the dialogue was dubbed during post production by Glenn Close as Andie’s accent was believed to be ‘too southern’), James Fox as Lord Charles Esker and Sir Ralph Richardson as the Sixth Earl of Greystoke. Sir Ralph died shortly after filming ended. As a consequence of his outstanding performance he received a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor; the film was dedicated to his memory.
