Grindhouse: Death Proof
Printer friendly version >
Directed by Robert Rodriquez, Tarantino and Eli Roth, Grindhouse is two full length feature films co-written by Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriquez. It is essentially a double-bill of their favourite exploitation films. Rodriquez directed ‘Planet Terror’ and Tarantino directed ‘Death Proof’. The film’s name comes from the US term ‘Grindhouse’ which is usually used to refer to a cinema that is in a state of disrepair and known for ‘grinding out’ double-bill B-movies. One movie is a zombie outbreak (Planet Terror) with Bruce Willis as Lt. Muldoon, Tarantino as Lewis (a rapist) and Rose McGowan as Cherry Darling; the other is a thriller where the killer stuntman, Mike (Kurt Russell) pursues his victims in a death proof stunt car (Death Proof). Eli Roth has a cameo part as Dov in Death Proof, Tarantino plays Warren and Rose McGowan is Pam appearing in both features. Each feature was joined together by fake trailers advertising fake films and venues in an attempt to recall the trailers and advertisements in 1950s exploitation drive-in classics. The end result was heavy on violence, language, nudity and drug use. Within the US Grindhouse was released as one feature but considered a box office failure, although it was well received by those who saw it and by most critics. It was later released as two separate DVDs; the trailers were omitted. Outside the US in some cases Grindhouse was released as one film in others Death Proof and Planet Terror were released as two separate extended feature films. This was the case in the UK; the fake trailers were excluded.

Locations used for this production:

  • Balls Park (not accessible) >
This location was chosen as the spooky house location in one of the fake trailers (likely to have been ‘Don’t’) for a 1970’s spoof horror film. Don’t was English film and television director Edgar Wright’s contribution to Grindhouse and featured Jason Issacs (Bearded Man), Matthew Macfadyen (Hatchet Victim), Katie Melua (Brunette with Hatchet Victim), Simon Pegg (Bearded Cannibal), Nick Frost (Baby Eater) and others; the actors had no dialogue. Whilst Don’t was not included in the UK theatre release, there is the possibility Wright will turn it into a feature film.
