This academy award winner directed by the acclaimed television and film director, Ken Loach was set in 1982 inspired by the real life events surrounding the John Stalker case in which a high level British Police Officer investigates a shooting carried out by British authorities in Northern Ireland resulting in the death of an American activist, Paul Sullivan (Brad Dourif) who was working with his fiance, Ingrid Jessner (Frances McDormand) to raise awareness of the alleged brutal human rights abuses carried out by British security forces.

Release / Airing: 11/01/1991

Locations used for this production:

  • Gaddesden Place (not accessible) >
Whilst the bulk of filming is on location in Belfast, Gaddesden Place in Hertfordshire formed the backdrop for a key scene set in Northern Ireland involving a meeting with Paul Kerrigan (Brian Cox who appeared in The Bourne Supremacy which also shot on location in the East of England) and two representatives of the British intelligence services Alec Nevin (Patrick Kavanagh) and Sir Robert Neil (Bernard Archard). Both men were accused by a British special forces officer called Harris (Maurice Roeves) to have conspired to destabilise the last labour government and could therefore have been instrumental in the death of Paul Sullivan whose murder Cox had been sent to investigate.
